us folk magazine

us folk, issue 2, winter 2012

I'm delighted to be featured in the current issue of Us Folk Magazine, a local, independent arts focused magazine recently brought to life by talented canberra designer Juliette Dudley & photographer Ash Peak. Juliette, Ash & my old friend Patrick Judge visited my studio to take some photos, chat & drink tea. There are some great articles & images in the magazine, including a story on our dear Megalo Print Studio... so go forth, support this great addition to Canberra arts culture, and find yourself a copy of Us Folk at Smith's Alternative Bookshop (Civic) or Paperchain Bookstore (Manuka).

fog descends

lithograph, 56 x 36 cm

A pair of colour proofs/variations for a new lithograph (each version is printed in 2 colours from 2 aluminium plates on grey B.F.K., the sky/fog is hand-coloured with pastel & gouache). I like the atmosphere created when the prints are side by side, hinting at the constantly, often quickly changing mountain weather. In the Pyrenees I remember subtle shifts, then suddenly a fog so thick I could see only as far as the nearest cairn, in a vast landscape space seemed to contract. Fog can wrap you in stillness, soften sound, suspend time.

River

etching, 2012, paper: 38 x 56 cm, plate: 19.5 x 39.5 cm

"The water changed to vapour and rose, became rain and came down again, became spring, brook and river, changed anew, flowed anew. But the yearning voice had altered. It still echoed sorrowfully, searchingly but other voices accompanied it, voices of pleasure and sorrow, good and evil voices, laughing and lamenting voices, hundreds of voices, thousands of voices ... They all belonged to each other: the lament of those who yearn, the laughter of the wise, the cry of indignation and the groan of the dying. They were all interwoven and interlocked, entwined in a thousand ways."

ClimARTe Change Group Show

I'm looking forward to participating in a group show at Form Studio and Gallery opening next tuesday (June 12th 6pm), which takes on the challenging theme of climate change. I have made a couple of works that, while related to landscape, focus on relating a more abstract, internal response to the subject - feelings of uncertainty, transition and threat were foremost in my mind. Below is one of my works on display and some further info on the exhibit:

Shift, charcoal & powdered graphite, 76 x 102 cm
